Runner, Runner - Out The Door

With only 5 minutes left for the night, we see multiple busts out thanks to running cards.

First it's Paola Martin (Los Angeles, CA) who's way ahead preflop with Q Q , but Bryan Veach, (Hyde Park, NY) who's holding K Q , goes runner-runner, flush to send Martin to the rail.

One hand later, at a neighboring table, "Action" Bob Hwang (Barnegat, NJ) has A-A and is an 80-20 favorite over Joe Simmons (Philadelphia, PA) and his Q-Q, but runner-runner, straight cards ends a frustrating day for Hwang.

Players are bagging and tagging for the night.

Four Hands

The number four has been drawn, and with 10 minutes to go, the clock is stopped. The dealers are instructed to deal four hands and four hands only, and then Day 2 ends.

There are 138 players remaining. Again, the money starts at 72.

Doubling Up Like A ... Something

Dave Fox

Seat 2 raises to 9,000 and seat 3 makes it 11,000. Matt Matros calls. Dave Fox makes it 35,000 and Seat 2 re-raises all in. Seat 3 and Matt fold and Dave calls all in, showing A-K. Seat 2 has J-J.

The board runs out 7-8-9-3-A and the scary flop turns into a miracle river for Dave. He now has 185,000. Dave tells us he had exactly 20,000 at the dinner break, so he's been running good since. This is probably the first time today that he's been above the chip average.

For Whom The Bell Tools

Chris Bell (Raliegh, NC) shoves 130k with KK and is out flopped by Rajesh Vohra (Pompano Beach, FL) who has A Q.

An ace on the board sends Bell home, while Vohra's up to 500k.

Ketan Gettin'

Jetan Pandyn just took a massive 400,000 pot from Barkley Hamilton with just top pair - J 8 with a jack-high board. These were the two biggest chip stacks at this table to start the hand. Now, Jetan has probably a top-five stack with 149 remaining.

I Will Survive

Joanne Monteavaro (Bronx, NY) was down to four thousand chips yesterday. She grinded and fought her way back and is still fighting.

Joanne just survived back to back all-in's. Both times everyone folded and she thanked the dealer.

Monteavaro has 50,000 but it was well earned and she's been protecting it nicely.

"I haven't lost a hand today" said Joanne who credits her accomplishment to solid play.

When she found out that only 5 women were left, she said, "That's good to hear. I always root for the girls." I'm sure a lot of people out there are rooting for you as well Joanne.

Level 16

Blinds are 1,500 / 3,000 with a 300 ante. This is the last level of the evening.

One Fifty-Two

There are 152 players remaining in the championship event, and we're on the last break of the evening. It appears increasingly unlikely that we'll hit the money bubble of 72 during this last level, so expect it to happen sometime during the first half of play tomorrow.

Chippy McStacks

John Renzi

While Jeff Madsen (Las Vegas, NV) continues to lead the way with 850k, there's a few stacks that, while not in his neighborhood, are at least in the same zip code.

Barkley Hamilton (Warwick, NY) 540k
Brian Meinder (Jackson, NJ) 450k
Barry Thaler (Brooklyn, NY) 420k
John Renzi (Boothwyn, PA) 400k

Level 16 underway.

Barkley Barking

Barkley Hamilton

Barkley Hamilton (Warwick, NY) claims he keeps turning over premium hands every time. He's up to 540,000 so it's not too hard to believe.

I asked if he was afraid of anyone at his table (12). He said no, then remarked, "Although the two-seat won't mix it up with me." Ketan Pandya (Piscataway, NJ) quipped back, "Hell no!".

So is it fear or respect? You decide. Either way, the guy is confident and has some skills.

Running Away With It

Jeff Madsen

Jeff Madsen now has 825,000 - about 4% of the chips in play with 159 remaining. Almost five out of every 100 in chips belongs to Jeff. He's far and away the chip leader here and is running out of space in front of him.

Callin' For the Chop

On a flop of 8 Q 10, Kathy Liebert raises to 8,000 and seat 4 makes it 38,000. Kathy is all in and her opponent calls.

Kathy: 10 10
Seat 4 Q Q

A disaster in the making. The teurn is a J. Kathy calls for a 9 on the river to split the pot and gets it - a 9. Facing elimination, she lives to fight another day.

There are 160 players remaining.

Table Can't Seem To Duck Mallor

Ross Mallor from (New York, NY) has already won the Sunday Million on Poker Stars (tysonduke23) and with 295,000 is positioning himself well at the Borgata Championship.

So how did this Private Investigator by day, poker player by night build his stack? "I got in good every time", said Mallor.

He was joking with the table when I was there telling one kid he looked just like The Situation from MTV's Jersey Shore.

Earlier he had Roy Winston all in drawing very slim, then punched his ticket out of the tournament.

Despite getting five callers on an A-Q raise Ross took down a 110,000 pot and knocked another player out who missed a monster diamond and straight draw.

Another notable hand padded Ross' stack when the turn K gave his opponent a straight and a river K rewarded Ross with a full-house (nines over kings).

We'll have to watch out for this guy. Although as a P.I. you never know if he's secretly watching us.

Event #22 - Payouts

No Limit
Buy-In $350 +$50

Entries: 257
Total Buy-In: $89,950

Place-Amount

1 $26,175
2 14,833
3 $8,158
4 $6,108
5 $5,235
6 $4,363
7 $3,490
8 $2,618
9 $1,746
10-12 $1,135
13-15 $960
16-18 $785
19-27 $654

So That Was It

We heard some commotion just before dinner, and now we've got the details of the hand that started it. It seems a player raised to 5,000 and Pete Malkoun (Philly) raised to 14,000. Barkley Hamilton shoved for 200,000. The initial raiser folded and Pete called with A-A. Barkley had K-K and a king came on the board. Barkley screamed aloud and made such a commotion that he received two back to back 15 minute penalties.

Pete was knocked down to 15,000 after that hand, but has since tripled up and now sits at around 45,000.

Madsen Felts Mercier

Jeff Madsen could be the chip leader with 620,000.

A couple orbits ago he knocked out Jason Mercier who got every bit of his 31,000 in with J-J.

Madsen called with 10-J of spades and they see a flop of 8-8-3.

Madsen begs the dealer for a 9 but gets a Q instead. He asks again for the 9.

This time the dealer delivers and Madsen's straight sends Mercier straight out the door.

Level 15

Blinds are 1,200 / 2,400 with a 300 ante. This is the second-to-last level of the night.

Building His Stack Brikis By Brikis

A lot of chips at Table 19.

Josh Brikis (Monroeville, PA) makes a great call.

Flop of Q-3-8 all hearts.

340,000 stack in position 1 leads out and Brikis raises.

9 of spades on the turn causes pos. 1 to lead out again.

Brikis raises, pos. 1 re-raises, Brikis calls.

River is a 10 clubs.

Pos. 1 leads out for 60,000 firing another bullet.

Josh thinks, replays the hand in his head, and makes the call.

Pos. 1 says, "you got it". Josh asks to see but the cards smack the muck.

Josh tables black 3-3 for a set and a 90,000 gain.

Kathy Lieb Hurt

Kathy Liebert

Kathy Liebert bets 6,000 and seat 2 calls. The flop comes 23 2 and Kathy leads out for 8,000. Seat 2 calls. The turn is 5 and Kathy checks. Seat 2 bets 13,500 and Kathy takes a minute to decide, eventually folding.

Seat 2 makes some sort of comment about Hollywooding. "No, I was really close to shoving," protests Kathy. "I'd have called," said Seat 2. "Really?" says Kathy.

She's down to 88,000 after that hand. The average stack is about 126,000.

Madsen Mania

Jeff Madson

Jeff Madsen (Las Vegas, NV) is back from dinner break and is clear chip leader with 590k. "I'm winning most of the pots I'm in," the two time WSOP bracelet holder says, "at least it seems that way. Plus the big pocket pairs help too."

Madsen's had pocket aces three times and they've held up against KK and QQ for decent sized pots.

As play resumes everyone at the table's looking to double through Madsen's stack. "I need to double-up 12 times," says Jason Mercier (Fort Lauderdale, FL), who only has 38k.

Other chip counts as players are back from dinner:

Dan Shak 220k
Alex "The Jedi" Nepomnyaschiy 200k
Barry Leventhal 175k
Will "The Thrill" Failla 150k
Josh Brikis 145k
Melanie Weisner 140k
Johanssy Joseph 95k
Gordon Eng 82k
Kathy Liebert 80k

Back From Dinner

Blinds are still 1,000 / 2,000 with a 200 ante.

Event #22 Update - No Limit

Buy-In $350 +$50

While the Championship Event is on dinner break there's a murmur in the back of the room coming from Event #22 and the 7 pm Second Chance tournaments.

Event #22 has 59 players remaining from the 257 starting field, including Alex Lindh, Mike Leah & Henry Doiban.

The average stack is 44k as the field heads to dinner at 7:45 pm.

First prize is $26,175 with 27 players cashing.

The Twitter Effect - Gavin Gone

Gavin Smith
(file photo)

Here on media row we can't see all the action all the time, but thanks to Allen Kessler introducing us to Twitter, we're able to pick up a few nuggets in cyberspace.

The latest comes from Gavin Smith's account: "Dang, out, managed to run into AA again, disappointed but happy to be heading home!"

We're disappointed as well, as Smith was accessible and accommodating, making it easy to cover the action at his table. All the players make our job easy, but Gavin was particularly nice and we appreciate it.

Others we're following on Twitter include: Lee Childs and Jason Mercier. You can follow us on Twitter as well @BorgataPoker.

Raisy Like a Fox

Dave Fox

Dave Fox says he's been nursing 12-15 big blinds for the last level and a half, but he says his table's playing like a $1/$2 cash game. Every hand is five to six way, whether the preflop raise is three big blinds or four big blinds. There's 30-50,000 in chips in the pot before a flop is even out.

Needless to say, Dave is hoping to get in on some of that action before he runs out of time.

There are 196 players remaining. We're still some distance from the tournament money bubble at 72, and it's anyone's guess whether the bubble will break in the next 4-5 hours.

6 Women Left. Can Paola Pull This Off?

Paola Martin

Paola Martin is one of only six women left so I asked her if that mattered, if she wanted to beat out the other female players.

Paola responded, "Absolutely it matters to me. That would be great to be the best woman and beat the others out."

Paola is working with 80,000 chips but the deck has been cold to her lately.

Paola is originally from Costa Rica but currently lives in Beverly Hills, CA.

She's been playing poker a few years and is becoming a regular WSOP Main Event entrant.

Her persona at the table seems to be polite and reserved and well liked by the other players.

Level 14

Blinds are 1,000 / 2,000 with a 200 ante. We're playing 40 minutes of this level before breaking for dinner.

Break Time

The remaining players in the championship event are on a 10 minute break. They'll come back and play 40 minutes of the next round before pausing for a 1 hour, 15 minute dinner break.

Shak vs Shamwow

Soheil is Stunned

Soheil Shamseddin (Houston, TX) takes a major hit when his J-J runs into Dan Shak (Bryn Mawr) and A-A. The board is clean and Shamseddin loses 160k as Shak doubles to more than nearly 330k.

"Shamwow" Shamseddin is crippled to 20k.

Another Alex Hand

A player bets 4,200 and Raj Vohra makes it 10,800. Alex N. calls and a late position woman makes it 26,000. Everyone folds and Alex re-pops to 75,000. They get it all in. Alex has 7-7 and the woman J-J. Alex rivers a 7 and busts his opponent, moving back up to 150,000.

Half a Mil

Chip leader Jeff Madsen extends his lead, stacking up to 500,000 right as his table breaks. Whatever table he ends up at is going to have a lot of players with that sinking feeling.

A Hand Made For TV

The entire table stood up and remained standing. As the smoke cleared I entered to gather the details of an explosive hand and atmosphere.

No one was knocked out but Pete Malkoun (Brookhaven, PA) would be severely crippled.

In a 360,000 pot, Barkley Hamilton (Warwick, NY) hit the case king in the window and destroyed Malkoun's pocket rockets. Usually a miracle hit of this magnitude invokes some pity on the man with the best hand pre. However in this case, the table seemed to side with Barkley.

Apparently the two of them mixed it up and trash talked back and forth in previous hands - coming over the top of each other with speeches, trying to entice calls, folds, etc.

After a raise, a re-raise, then a 170,000 all in shove by Barkely, Barkely says to Malkoun, "You know you're not gonna call". Then Malkoun calls two of his friends over to the table to watch the show before responding back, "I'm gonna call, I just want you to sweat my aces for a while."

After the slo-roll he flips over A-A which we now know were quickly busted by the case K. Board finished K-7-2-6-4. The pot more than doubled Barkley up.

Sidenote: Barkely was so excited when he hit his improbable set and punished his foe that he was forced to sit out a level for "excessive celebration".

Malkoun will have to dust himself off and see if he can forge a comeback.

How To Lose 31k

No Show

David Paredes (New York, NY) is a no show for Day 2 and the players at his table are having a good time "stealing" his blinds and antes. Paredes begins the day with 31,450 and players joke that he's playing "very tight."

It takes nearly 6 hours, but Paredes finally busts from the small blind when Brandon Hall (Littlestown, PA) wins the pot. "He was speechless," says Hall as Paredes is officially eliminated from the tournament.

Another Big Stack

David Meinders

He starts the day with 83k and David Meinders (Jackson, NJ) continues a steady climb to pass the 300k mark. Meinders' biggest pot is 150k when he flops two pairs vs K-K.

Tangling with the Chipleader

Jeff Madsen bets 4,000 and seat 7 calls, checking in the dark. The flop is K 4 K and Jeff bets 5,600. Seat 7 calls and again, checks in the dark. The turn is 10 and both check. The river is Q and seat 7 leads out for 15,000. Jeff eventually folds and the opponent shows not a straight, but a K for the flopped trips. "Nice hand," says Jeff. The tangle didn't hurt Jeff's stack much, and he remains the chipleader.

Madsen Making Hay

Jeff Madsen

Jeff Madsen (Las Vegas, NV) starts the day with 95k and is now at 340k. One person in the room says, "Madsen with chips is a dangerous thing."

Level 13 (800/1600/200 ante) continues.

Going For #1

Josh Mancuso (Mandeville, LA) started the day with 50,300 chips at table #1, seat #1 and he's still there.

I watched him take down a decent pot with pocket Q-Q as he used one of them to make a flush.

Josh is now at 200,000. Table #1, Seat #1, going for #1.

Level 13

Blinds are 800 / 1,600 with a 200 ante. Shuffle up and feel (if you're that type of player)!

Break Time Again

The 252 players left in Day 2 action are on a 10 minute break. It appears they'll be playing from 5 - 6:30, taking a 10 minute break, playing 20 minutes of the next level, then taking dinner at 7.

Jedi Never Bluff

Alex "Jedi" N. said he bluffed off another player with 6 3 on an A-7-J-10 board with three diamonds. The opponent folded an ace and Alex showed his bluff. He's at about 160,000.

At the same table, Dave Fox has picked up a couple of small pots and is trying to claw his way back. He has 31,500 and has a long way to go.

Frangos 2: The Wrath of Cairns

In two hands David Cairns (Toronto, Ontario) busted out Nicky Frangos (Mays Landing, NJ).

Hand #1: David's A-A up against Nicky's A-K. They raise and re-raise back and forth five times.

David - "I tried to figure out the exact amount he'd call. Once I did, he jammed it all in and I insta-called."

Cairns' aces hold up and he deflates Frangos from 160,000, down to 30,000.

Hand #2: In the same orbit, David looks down at K-Q off-suit. On a flop of K-10-5 (two diamonds) Frangos shoves the rest. He misses the draw and Cairns finishes Frangos off.

David now has 295,000. His next target? He seems to be mixing it up with Melanie Weisner (Houston, TX) who's sitting directly across from him - although she seems to have gotten the best of him thus far.

The Rise of Raj

Raj "BadCardsAA" Vohra (Lake Worth) tells us he busted Dwyte Pilgrim when he raised from early position, and Dwyte called on the button. The flop was 9-4-7 and they checked. The turn was 10 and Raj bet 6,500. Dwyte shoved for 48,000 and Raj called. Raj showed K-K and Dwyte had Q-J. The river did not complete the straight and Dwyte busted out.

Raj is now up to 240,000 and appears to be among the upper echelon of chipleaders.

Card Dead Dentale

Mike Dentale

Mike Dentale (Brooklyn, NY) has been card dead most of the day. He finally picks up K-K up against Q-Q and J-J. On a ten high board, he leads out and both opponents get away from their hands.

"Guess they're showing me some respect", said Mike who is up around 50,000.

Meanwhile a couple women at the table can't seem to lose, falling into A-A, A-K, and K-K many, many times.

Guess sometimes you get the deck and sometimes the deck gets you.

Random Chip Counts

Gavin Smith 200k
James Boyle 109k
Dave Fox 76k
Gordon Eng 45k
Jason Young 20k "Just put, the worst ever."
Allen Kessler, eliminated
Jena Delk, eliminated

270 players remain with an average stack of 85k

Tables of Death

Dwyte Pilgrim

Here are some tough tables among the final 30 or so.

Gavin Smith & Jason Young
Barry Leventhal & Dan Shak & Vinny Pahuja
Alex N. & Dave Fox & Dwyte Pilgrim

Tank - Clock - Insta Call

As day 2 continues, players continue to jockey for position. Farrokh Force (Bala Cynwyd, PA) is put to the test holding K-K. After a flop of 7 2 4 ♣, Force leads out and his opponent comes over the top for 70k more and is all in.

Force tanks, fearing a set and the flush draw, but once the clock is called, he insta calls. Force sees he's up against two big hearts and when the board bricks he can breath easier as he scoops the 150k pot and is up to 230k.

James Boyle (Havre De Grace, MD), who's at the table says, "they really turned the heat up on that one. It was a great call."

Level 12 (600/1200/100 ante) continues.

Brady Busted

Matt Brady

Matt Brady said he lost a big stack earlier with K-K versus J-9 and a jack on the flop. The opponent spiked a third jack and made Matt shortstacked. Matt then got it in with K Q versus A-J, turn king, but river ace. Matt's heading to Los Angeles next for their big event. Better luck there, Matt!

Quad-Man Strikes Again

James "Quad-man" Romoser (Washington, DC) shoves his short stack all-in with only 8-8.

Pocket aces call and Romoser hits 8-8-8-8 for his third hand of quads today.

He's up to 60,000. This kid is a statistical 4-of-a-kind phenom.

Back

The remaining 297 players or so in the championship event are back from break.

House Of Flops

Rich Davidson (Whippany, NJ) is playing for his kids Jason, Sammi, & Nikki. Dad's doing pretty good with a stack of 207,000.

Rich flopped two full houses and got paid off on both to get where he is.
"These guys just keep handing me chips" said Davidson.

Break Time

The remaining players in the championship event are on a 10 minute break.

Fall of the Jedi

Alex N.

Alex "Jedi" N. is down a little bit from his 130,000 ish starting stack today. He said he ran queens into aces once. He's still alive and remains a credible threat throughout Day 2 action.

Alex would like to give a shout out to his girl Sheri, who we hope is reading this blog right now.

Sham Wow Update

Soheil Shamseddin (Houston, TX) started the day second in chips with 172,000.

"It's been a yo-yo today, up and down" - said Shamseddin.

Soheil was down to 150,000 and up as much as 300,000. Right now he's hovering 260,000.

David Inselberg (Long Beach, NY) whispered to me, "I can't open a hand cause he's on my left. I keep folding because I know if I play, my entire tournament could be at risk."

One hand Inselberg felt comfortable playing was pocket A-A. Of course Shamseddin jammed it pre with A-K and David's life was indeed at stake.

As if mopping up an accidental mishap spill, Sham Wow seemed almost happy to double up his friend to his right.

Event #22 Noon 350 + 50 Update

Event #22 Noon 350 + 50 is at Level 4.

Blinds are (40 min.) 100 - 200 and 23 tables remain.

Gavin Smith Looking To Pounce

Gavin Smith

Quick interview with Gavin Smith who is up to 220,000 chips.

He says his table is pretty solid with three very strong players.

According to Gavin, Jason Young is a little tilty but did manage to double up to 40K.

Smith already busted one loose player and I guess now has a taste for it stating, "I'll probably bust everyone here before the day is over".

Break Time

Championship Event is on a fifteen minute break from the action.

Kathy Liebert In Good Spirits

Kathy Liebert

Sometimes a table change is all you need.

Kathy is sitting on 45,000 but had under 30,000 at her previous table.

Liebert's hands are holding up and her plays are working at table #33.

"This table is nice and friendly. I'm drinking a Red Bull so I'm ready to play and be here for awhile."

It's true, even Frank Richardome (Staten Island) is smiling after his pocket aces get annihilated by pocket kings spiking the case king on the river.

Kathy continued to laugh with the table - "I always have it. I'm never bluffing. You can quote me on that."

Roy Winston Roller Coaster

Roy "The Oracle" Winston

Going down: Roy starts the day with 66,600 and cools off when his A-Q runs into Q-10 on a flop of Q-Q-10. Then his wired 10-10's lose to a J-J short stack shove.

Going up: Roy Winston knocks out Bill Blanda (Galveston, TX). Bill played his rockets correctly but Roy's wired deuces hit a set on the river to send Bill to the rail.

Going down: Roy's K-K loses to opponent's A-K when an ace hits the flop.

So Roy is down to 22,000 but still quite confident. "I think I'm gonna come back and win this thing." If anyone can do it, the "Oracle" can.

Championship Event - Level 10 Rolling

75 minute levels and we're now at Level 10: 400-800 blinds and 75 antes.

405 players remain. Average stack = 56,740

More Quad QQQQueens = 100K

John Alexander (Montville, NJ) sends two players to the rail with Quad Queens.

AA vs. QQ vs. 33.

Board of Q-7-2-Q-3 creates huge action and commotion.

Aces and Queens, no good.
Threes full of queens, no good.
Quad Queens - good for a monster pot of 100,000.

John - "About a forty minutes ago I had quad Jacks and didn't show."

Broken Wheel

Nachman Berlin (Brooklyn, NY) holding wired As-Ad sees a flop of 8-5-4 of diamonds.

Turn is a non-diamond 2 but Berlin picks up a straight draw. River 3 gives Nashman the straight.

But wait...Dave Farah (Fairfield, NJ) shoved the river with 6-3 of spades and hit the higher straight.

Event #22 Underway

Event #22 is underway

Players trying to win a crystal trophy only have a few more chances to to take home the title. Tuesday's 350 +50 NL tournament is off and running.

Looks like the plethora of players trying to win the coveted crystal trophy and title prize are down to just a few more chances.

Quad Queens Twice In Three Hands

James "Quad-man" Romoser

James' Queens could make him King.

In three hands James Romoser (Washington, DC) had pocket queens twice and both times hit quads on the flop.

The first victim was Steven Lerner (Brooklyn, NY) who had pocket aces.

Lerner's all in of 50k didn't scare Romoser who must have sensed his statistically good fortune approaching.

#1 Cimpan at Table #1

As we started today, our chip leader, Cornel Andrew Cimpan (League City, TX) is at table #1 with $183,700.

A lot of chips on this felt with potential transfer of power as Tony Burton (Santa Rosa Beach) has $117,900 and Robert Stevanovski (Cornelius, NC) has 106,300.
