Event #11, Limit: Back from Dinner

Ahmed Mohamed, 63k

Ahmed Mohamed (Scotch Plains, NJ) is the chip leader with 63k as 28 players return from dinner break. Mohamed got off to an early start when hit a set against two players holding A-K. "I'm getting luck," he says. "I'm playing well, but getting lucky."

Candace Verrastro (Mount Pleasant, NJ) is second in chips with 50k. "I like it," says Verrastro, as she assess Limit poker. "It's a different game where you end up value betting instead of trapping," as she compares it to NL.

Level 11 (500/1k) is underway with an average stack of 24k.

Blinds are 15,000 / 30,000 with a 4,000 ante. Six players remain.

Event #10, Deep Stack: Huge Hand

Dave Fox, the unofficial chip leader with Event #6
winner Mike Beasley

On the last hand before dinner break, two of the biggest stacks in the room tangle in a 185k pot.

Dave Fox (Long Island, NY) and Frank Lubas (Mantua, NJ) both have more than 100k as they 3 bet preflop to take the pot to nearly 20k. The flop of 9 3 5 brings three more bets for a total of 55k each.

The turn is the 6 and Fox leads out for 30k, which Lubas calls. The river is the A and both players check.

Fox shows 3-3 for the set vs Lubas J-J. "I just couldn't lay it down," Lubas says while looking at his decimated stack of 35k. "I need to create a miracle now."

"Not too bad," says the understated Fox, who's now at 194k and the unofficial chip leader.

Potpourri

Michael Rich (Stratford, CT) 92k
Steve "Cuz" Buckner (Pompano Beach, FL) 61k
Jimmy "Suits" Salters (W. Hempstead) 80k

Right before break Pete Moffatt (Philadelphia, PA) doubles to 50k with 6 9 vs Buckner's A K , to which one player says, "big lick always beats big slick."

Players just back from break as Level (600/1200/200 ante) is underway.

Event #11, Limit: Notables

Howard Whiteley (Newark, DE) won the Limit title in September at the Borgata Poker Open and is looking for a second straight title. "It's a slow go right now," says Whiteley.

The man Whiteley beat heads-up for the title, Al Riccobono (Ossining, NY), is already out and taking a break until the Main Event. "You know you're running good," he says sarcastically, " when you bust early in limit."

The always colorful Howard Wolpner (Atlantic City, NJ) is also in field.

The players are gearing up for the dinner break.

Event #10, Deep Stack: Chow Time

The Met, N.O.W. or Borgata Buffet?

Jason Warriner (Abescon, NJ) and 350 of his closest friends have survived the $500 NL dinner break and are glad to get the complimentary food coupon. "You know you're doing well when you get one of these," says Warriner, who's sitting on 40k after a roller coaster day.

The average stack is 53k as players are on a one hour break. Play resumes at 8:20 pm

Event #8 $300 RE: Break

The remaining six players in Event #8 have elected to take a one-hour dinner break.

Event #8 $300 RE: Maurice Paradis Eliminated in 7th ($3,038)

Maurice Paradis

Jonathan Guercio raises on the button and Maurice Paradis goes all in from the small blind. Jonathan calls.

Jonathan: 9-9
Maurice: A Q

The flop comes A K 4, giving Maurice tons of outs, but the turn and river are 95, giving Jonathan the set and fading the club or ace. Maurice is eliminated.

Event #8 $300 RE: The Tale of Two Double-Ups, Part 2

Maurice Paradis raises to 50,000 and Jonathan Guercio goes all in. Maurice calls.

Maurice: 7 7
Jonathan: J J

Board: 10 Q A 3 8

Jonathan doubles.

Event #8 $300 RE: The Tale of Two Double-Ups, Part 1

The short stacks have tenacity, folks.

Mike Linster raises to 55,000 and Spenser Mensh calls. The flop is 7 A 8 and both check. The turn is K and Spenser shoves. Mike calls.

Spenser: A Q
Mike: A 5

The river is 3 and Spenser doubles up.

Event #8 $300 RE: We're Back

Blinds are 12,000 / 24,000 with a 3,000 ante. Now there are seven.

Event #8 $300 RE: Break

The remaining players in Event #8 are on a 15 minute break.

Event #8 $300 RE: David King Eliminated in 8th ($2,279)

David King

Jackie Aloush raises to 40,000. Mike Linster calls and David King calls.

The flop is A 3 7 and David goes all in for 65,000. Jackie calls and Mike folds.

Jackie: 3 3
David: A 5

The turn and river are 8 5 and David is out.

Event #8 $300 RE: A Bit Nitty

The atmosphere at the Event #8 table can best be described as very tight. Whoever opens takes the pot, or whoever re-raises the opener takes the pot. Very few flops. That might change as the blinds get a little higher.

Event #8 $300 RE: Level Up

Blinds are up to 10,000 / 20,000 with a 3,000 ante. Still eight players remaining.

Event #8 $300 RE: Basically Even

The remaining players in Event #8 are very close in chips, with one shortstack. Nobody seems willing to commit.

Event #8 $300 RE: Level Up

Blinds are 8,000 / 16,000 with a 2,000 ante. Shuffle up and deal!

Event #8 $300 RE: Break Time

The remaining eight players in Event #8 are on a 15 minute break. Michael Linster tells us he has 600,000.

Event #8 $300 RE: A Winning Combination

A friend of Mike Linster on the rail was eating some food from the Quick Bites menu.

"What are you having?" said Mike.

"Hot dog and sushi," his friend replied.

"Hot dog and sushi?!" said Mike.

"Yeah, you want some?"

"No."

Event #8 $300 RE: Dealer Change!

David King, in the 10 seat, is jokingly requesting a female dealer. It seems he doesn't like sitting that close to another man. The staff, of course, does not oblige.

Event #8 $300 RE: Gerald Rodman Eliminated in 9th ($1,519)

Gerald Rodman

Gerald ran Q J into K 8 on a 10 A 6 2 7 board.

Event #8 $300 RE: William Loonstyn Eliminated in 10th ($987)

William Loonstyn

Event #8 $300 RE: Final Ten

The final table is remarkably flat, with no one player dominating much.

1. Raymond Gormley 270,000
2. Jackie Aloush 330,000
3. Spenser Mensh 300,000
4. William Loonstyn 155,000
5. Mike Linster 350,000
6. Anthony Bruschi 410,000
7. Maurice Paradis 270,000
8. Gerald Rodman 40,000
9. Jonathan Guercio 150,000
10. David King 280,000

Event #8 RE: Back

Blinds are 5,000 / 10,000 with a 1,000 ante. Still eleven players left.

Event #8 RE: Break Time

The remaining 11 players in Event #8 are on a 15-minute colorup break. They'll likely not play long after the break before redrawing.

Event #8 RE: Michael Linster Takes Big One

On a flop of 9 4 2, Michael Linster bets 35,000 and Salomon Cohen calls. The turn is 4 and Linster checks. Salomon bets 45,000 and Linster check-raises all in. Salomon goes into the tank for nearly ten minutes. Eventually the clock is called and the hand is ruled dead. Interestingly, Linster promised to show if Solomon folded. Since the hand was dead, Linster escaped with a loophole and did not show. What he did do was take a nice pot.

There are but 12 players remaining. Yes, they're dropping like flies.

Event #8 RE: First Two Out

The first two eliminated in Event #10: Eric Rockwell and Edgardo Rosario.

Event #8 RE: Shuffle Up and Deal!

There's 10 minutes and 45 seconds left in the current level. Blinds are 3,000 / 6,000 with a 500 ante.

Event #8 $300 RE: Final Eighteen

David King leads this event with nearly 300K in chips.

Event #8 $300 RE: Start of Day 2

Event #10: Level 4

Blinds are now 100 / 200.

Event #11 Limit: Level 1

Event #11 kicked off a bit ago, and the blinds started at 25 / 50.

Event #11: Limit to My Patience

Event #11, the $300 + $50 Limit Hold'em event, it scheduled to kick off very soon around the edges of the ballroom. A favorite among "math" poker players and those that want a change of pace from No Limit, expect many check raises and more people seeing flops. It all starts in a few minutes!

Event #10: Level 3

And we're back. It's Level 3 and the blinds are 75 / 150.

Event #10: Break Time

The remaining players in the Event #10 Deep Stack are on a 10-minute break.

Event #10: Unofficial Numbers

TD Tab tells us that there are over 700 registrants for Event #10, paying the top 72 players. That would put the prize pool around $350,000 with first place around $70,000. Impressive!

Event #10: Mike Sica Eliminated

Hovan Nguyen raises to 2,625 preflop. Mike "Little Man" Sica and Seat 9 call.

The flop comes 10 6 10 and Hovan bets 8,500. Sica calls and Seat 9 folds.

The turn is 10 and Hovan bets 8,000. Sica calls. "See you at the bar," he quips to the media.

The river is J and Hovan is all in for his last 8,000. Sica calls and turns over K K - but Hovan has A A. Sica busts early in day 1 after running kings into aces. See you in the next event, Little Man!

Event #10 DS: Seat Open! Seat Open?

Despite the massive stacks and tiny blind levels, we have heard the shouts of "Seat Open!" a few times in this large room. I suppose the nuts beating the second nuts was bound to happen at some point. In Event #1, Matt Brady bested quads with a straight flush. We've been meaning to call him "Straight Flush" Brady next time we see him.

Event #10 DS: Level 2

Blinds are now $50 / $100 as we roll right into the next level!

Event #10 DS: Who's Here

A room full of 500+ yawning players, who all obviously had late nights last night, and here's who we've spotted among them.

Eugene Castro
Gordon Eng
Eric Siegel
Charlie Marchese
Mike Sica
Robert Varkonyi
Jason Young
Bill Blanda
Dean Schultz

Event #10 DS: Ted Geier's Chop Beat

Ted Geier tells us that in the first hand of the tournament, he flopped the nut straight and ended up chopping with an opponent making a dubious all-in call holding a jack and hitting the shared queen on the river.

Wasch confirms that neither she or Siu can reraise and both players call.

The flop of 4 2 10 has Siu move all in, forcing Wasch to fold Q-Q. Siu tables K-K, while Miller shows J-J.

The board bricks out and Siu wins the monster pot to build her stack to more than 600k.

Miller's eliminated in 10th place and earns $666.

Event #8, NL Re-entry: Shut It Down

King for a Day

Play's done for the night as the field of 261 players is down to 18.

The unofficial chip leader is David King (Brooklyn, NY), who took advantage of the re-entry when he busted 30 minutes into the tournament. "Very thankful for the second chance," says King who has 298k. "I'm very pleased with my play and I've caught a couple of breaks. "With the blessing of the Father, I'm doing alright."

The opportunity to buy back into the tournament factored into King's play when he busted early on. King had 8 8 and the board came 10 high. "I thought he was taking advantage of the re-buy and was making a move. It turned out I was wrong, he hit top pair." King added that he wouldn't have made the same call in a standard NL tournament, but that if "my read was wrong, I could always get back in."

The final 18 players return at 2 pm to play for the the $22,785 top prize.

Unofficial Leaders

Event #8, NL Re-entry: Chip Leader

Tony Bruschi (Atlantic City, NJ) is the unofficial chip leader with 23 players remaining. Bruschi takes down a 120k pot when his A-J beats out K-Q on a board of bricks and takinf his stack to 230k.

Right behind Bruschi is Spencer Mensch (Baltimore, MD) with 210k.

Level 16 (3k/6k/500 ante) is the last level of the night.

Final Table Hands

Chris Lindh doubles up when he wins a much needed coinflip with AK versus the pocket Q's of Daniel Makowsky.

Mike Beasley caught running miracles to chop a pot when he was all-in and way behind with A10 versus AJ.

Ilya Dyment lost half his stack when his pocket 9's ran into the pocket 10's of Eugene Fouksman.

Play continues with all 10 players still alive.

Event #8, NL Re-entry: Bubble Breaks

Bubble Boy

After 30 minutes and 5 short stacks doubling up, Bill Loonstyn (Philadelphia, PA) ends the bubble watch by busting Harry Friedberg (Montclair, NJ).

Friedberg, from the button, shoves all-in with 9 9 vs. Loonstyn's Q Q in the small blind. The turn gives Friedberg an up and down straight draw, but the 2 on the river ends Friedberg's night in 28th place, one spot out of the money.

"Oh, well. What are you going to do," Friedberg asks rhetorically and is in much better spirits than 99% of the players who are bubble victims.

Level 17 (4k/8k/500 ante) continues.

Event #9 Ladies NL: Quick Burst

It only takes three hands for the bubble to break, but with all ins at two different tables, the floor manager does some hopping. At Table 1 the pocket 5s of Sheree Bykofsky (Brigantine, NJ) is beaten by pocket 10s. At the same time, on Table 3, Lori Adams (Lake Hopatcong, NJ) moves all in with 2-2 only to lose to Stephanie Nolan (Belleville, NJ) who spikes a king with K-9.

Adams has fewer chips than Bykofsky, so even though the eliminations happened at two different tables, the floor determines that Adams goes out on the bubble in 28th place, while Bykofsky is the first to cash in 27th, good for $384.

Level 16 (3k/6k/500 ante) continues.
